Legendary South African composer and pianist Abdullah Ibrahim has revealed the release of his upcoming album, titled "3," set to debut on January 26th via Gearbox Records. Derived from his sold-out headline performance at London's Barbican Centre during the summer of 2023, the album continues the trend of capturing the essence of live performances.

"3" unfolds across two distinct sessions. The first session is recorded without an audience, captured prior to the concert, and is meticulously transferred onto analogue using a 1" Scully tape machine. Notably, this particular tape machine was once employed by Elvis at the renowned Sun Studios in Memphis, adding a historical resonance to the recording process.

The second recording captures the essence of the evening's performance featuring Ibrahim in a unique trio alongside accomplished musicians Cleave Guyton (flute, piccolo, saxophone) and esteemed bassist and cellist Noah Jackson. Both Jackson and Guyton are members of Ekaya and contributed to Ibrahim's top 3 Billboard Jazz album, "The Balance."

The recordings showcase special new tracks and moving arrangements influenced by Ibrahim's diverse musical upbringing, blending elements of gospel, jive, American jazz, classical music, and sacred and secular tones. The trio skillfully interprets tracks by iconic figures such as Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, weaving together a tapestry of sounds underlined by Ibrahim's fluid and ebullient playing style. The absence of percussion heightens the emotional impact, emphasizing poignant and energetic moments alike.

Abdullah Ibrahim, also known as Dollar Brand, stands as one of South Africa's most renowned musicians. Born during the apartheid era, his music symbolizes freedom, acting as a form of resistance. His anti-apartheid anthem, "Mannenberg," is regarded as an unofficial national anthem in South Africa. He has collaborated with jazz legends like Duke Ellington, Max Roach, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman. Notably, he performed at Nelson Mandela's inauguration, earning the title "our Mozart" from Mandela. His impact extends to his daughter, underground rapper Jean Grae.
